Author-composer, interpreter and ethnomusicologist, Alsarah comes to us straight from Brooklyn. But she finds her strength from her country of birth, Sudan. She calls herself an African retro-pop musician. In 2010, she founded the group The Nubatones with her sister, Nahid, choir singer, bassist Kodjovi Mawuena, oud player and instrument maker Haig Manoukian (replaced by Brandon Terzic after his death), and percussionist Rami El-Aasser. With an EP and two albums in hand, the last called Manara (2016), the group has toured nationally and internationally and has repeatedly proven that the mind can break any cultural and linguistic barriers.
