Tartit

Tartit is an iconic group on the Tuareg music scene, and one of the few led by women. Founded in 1995 by Fadimata Walet Oumar, aka "Disco", the group originates from Timbuktu, Mali (more precisely from the Goundam district, a territory close to the Mauritanian border) but was created in exile, between Mauritanian and Burkinabe refugee camps.

Since its formation, Tartit has strived to preserve Tuareg musical culture by performing it around the world, while constantly updating it: by adding new instruments, song formats adapted to albums, etc.

Weaving together women's voices, ululations, handclaps, and electric guitars, its songs convey a message of love, peace, and defence of the rights of the Kel Tamajeq (a community speaking Tamajeq, the language of the Tuareg).

Tartit's rich repertoire has been released in four albums: Amazagh (1997, Fontimusical), Ichichila (2000, Network & Divano Production), Abacabok (2006, Crammed Discs), and Amankor / The Exile (2019, Riverboat Record & World Music Network).

And how incredible that their first international concert took place in Liège in 1995… at the Voix De Femmes Festival!
