A concert-performance offering an original approach to the dialogue between traditional Aïta music, theatre, cabaret, gender identity and Moroccan society.
Performing a repertoire of popular Moroccan folklore spanning several centuries, its members pay tribute to the sheikhats, free but marginalised women who tell the story of their times through singing, music and dance. The Kabareh Cheikhats performers go further than a simple musical repertoire: they pay tribute to a part of culture that is often neglected, while tackling taboos that are still very much alive in contemporary society.
Initially conceived as a play, Kabareh Cheikhats eventually became a musical performance, and is now given numerous private and public performances in Morocco, Europe and the United States.
On the festival stage this year, we welcome an original performance developed in collaboration with our guest curator, Belgian-Moroccan singer Laïla Amezian.
